I was fortunate enough to be allowed to visit Chickfila’s Employee Wellness Center a few weeks back. During my visit, I learned a little piece of New Year Resolution advice I simply had to share.
We all make New Year’s Resolutions and rarely do they last past January. I know I have! They are usually something like…I want to lose weight, work out more, use electronics less. The list goes on and on. The piece of advice I am dying to share is, sum up your focus for the New Year with a word. Sounds less than spectacular, right? So simple and yet is has already guided the path of my 2014! The idea came from a blog called “Leadership Freak” and the link is posted below along with a guide to finding your word. The idea is to mull over the many goals, dreams, aspirations you have for this year and think of one word that encompasses them all. You are then suppose to utilize this word as sort of a base for making decisions, big or small, throughout the year. The word is supposed to focus your intentions daily to reach your goals. When you come to a decision you simply ask yourself questions utilizing your word.
Is this ____? Is this going to spread ____to others? Is this going to bring ____ into my year?
*insert your word in the blank*
I was getting out of my car to go to work the day after my visit to Chickfila and thought “I should come up with my word”. With a quick prayer and thoughts of everything I wanted for this year running through my head, it came to me. My original New Year’s resolution was to save money. I know it even SOUNDS like a chore and it has been for me in the past. With my word, I am able to refocus before making decisions. It has helped me step back and say, “Is this choice going to help me reach my goals for 2014”, and if not I have no problem letting it go. So go ahead, give it a try!
